He volunteered in September 1914 (1/6/1916 on SWB list) and was shortly afterwards drafted to France, where he saw much heavy fighting and was buried by the explosion of a shell. As a result he was invalided home, but on his recovery returned to France and was in action at the Battles of Ypres and Hill 60. He was badly gassed and again sent home suffering from dysentery. Later he served at Felixstowe until his demobilisation in March 1919 (6/6/1919 on SWB card), and holds the 1914 Star (1915 Star on medal card) and the General Service and Victory Medals.
