Extract from the Dumfries and Galloway Standard, 13/10/1917. Kirkmichael Man In An Air Raid. Mrs McGhie, Shawfoot, Kirkmichael has received a letter from her husband, Mr Thomas McGhie, who is serving in London with the Military Foot Police in which he describes a narrow escape which he had during the air raid on 30th September. He had just gone to bed when the alarm went. He got up and dressed and was going on duty when a shell came through the roof of his hut, over the top of his bed, smashed the bed to pieces, and went down through the floor, six feet into the ground. Luckily for those in the hut, it did not go off. Another shell wrecked the house in front of theirs, Mr McGhie served for two years with the Scots Guards, and was severely wounded at Loos. |
