Citation: Alexandria. Citation for BEM; On 4th March, 1946, Corporal JUMP was in charge of the Military Police Outpost in Midan Saad Baghloul, Alexandria, when it was attacked by a hostile crowd for two hours, who later set it on fire and murdered two of his comrades. Corporal JUMP showed great initiative and leadership over and above the call of his duty in the way he handled the very difficult situation. Only when badly wounded in the shoulder and in great pain, did he relinquish his command to the next senior Non Commissioned Officer, and even then encouraged his comrades verbally until he was evacuated. This Non Commisioned Officer's devotion to duty is worthy of the highest praise. He showed extreme bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.National Archive WO 373/70 Pt.1.5335820 L/Cpl H A D Ayres was also awarded a BEM for this incident. 1616627 L/Cpl P D Maile and 5783652 Pte A J Bailey were killed by the rioters, both are buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery
