On the first occasion CASTLETON managed to get away on a mass escape in September 1943 and reached the mountains. After recapture and internment in a castle he escaped again along an old passage, spending the next four months in hiding near ROME where he was sheltered by anti-fascists. Later CASTLETON twice tried to escape by tunnelling once from a train and twice from the line of march before he was finally liberated in April 1945.National Archive WO 373/103. |
