FIFTY YEARS AND NEVER OUT OF WORK. Mr and Mrs James Edward Apps, of Seal, celebrate their golden wedding today (Friday), and during all those years of married life Mrs. Apps told the Sevenoaks Chronicle her husband has never been without work, although they have seen many changes. At the age of 74 he is now employed on the Knole Estate. Mr Apps is extremely hearty for years, but his wife has rarely been out of her home during the twelve years they have lived there. "Still I don't complain." she said. "II find there is ever so much I can do for things in the village, although I cannot attend them. Mr Apps is a member of the Seal British Legion and I belong to the Women's Section. In fact I am the first member. A MILITARY CAREER. Mr and Mrs Apps were married at All Saints' Church, Hatcham, London, in 1881, the day after one of the severest blizzards in living memory, and they continued to live in London until the end of the War, when Mr Apps, who is a Maidstone man, came to Seal in the service of Lord Hillingden. He is a military man, however, as indeed one can see by his bearing. In 1876 he joined the 17th Lancers, but in the same year transferred to the Army Service Corps. Later he joined the Middlesex Yeomanry, changing six years afterwards to the Kentish Yeomanry, with whom he served in 6the South African War and until 1918. Age alone prevented Mr Apps going into active service during the Great War but he served throughout the last two years with the Military Mounted Police. |
