Info from pension record: Born in Guildford, Surrey. Re enlisted in Reading 5/9/1914, Age 47.10 years Previously served in MMP in Egypt 1898. Served Home 5/9/1914 to 16/7/1915, BEF 17/7/1915 to 19/1/1916, Home 20/1/1916 to 8/12/1916. Home address: 8 Larch Road, Balham and 71 Katesgate Road, Reading. On 18/12/1914 he was Local Acting Sergeant Major at Wareham with the 17 Division. Embarked for France 12/7/1915, Disembarked 13/7/1916 serving with 17 Division. He faced a district court martial on 3/8/1916 which states 5/8/1914, Reading, in a declaration signed by him knowingly making a false statement. At a District Court Martial he was reduced to the ranks (he was a Sgt). Lots of letters in records, it would appear that a mistake in the pay office added another child to his documents and he received an allowance for this. When the mistake was discovered he was punished. 8/12/16 Discharged with heart disease and rheumatism. 9/6/1916, Clipstone Camp, charge irregular conduct whilst on duty, reprimand. 13/10/1916,Aldershot, Pte. charge I. AWOL from 4/45pm stable call, II. Not complying with an order, fined 2 days pay. Pension Index Card not found. Arthur George Harris. |
