Citation: | Italy. Citation for US Bronze Star: No. 2692776 Corporal John FERGUSON, 78 Divisional Provost Company, C.M.Police, BRITISH ARMY. For meritorious achivement in support of military operations against the enemy during the period 7th October, 1944 to 19th November, 1944. Cpl. John FERGUSON during this period was a section Cpl. In No.2 section of the 78 Divisional Provost Company, C.M. Police. He did consistantly perform his duties in the handling of traffic in an outstanding manner, often under shell-fire, placing the welfare of his men before his own safety, thereby maintaining a high morale amongst the men under him. On the 17th October, 1944 at CASTEL DEL RIO whilst the road was under heavy shell-fire he went forward and assisted in the removal of a number of vehicles from the affected area. Between the 26th October, 1944 and the 5th November, 1944 he did consistently well in keeping a forward 'Straggler's Post at GESSO in operation when the area was under constant shell-fire and the road communications deteriorated from bad to impassable. During this period this post was visited twice per day and supplied entirely through the energetic efforts of this NCO. This materially assisted the morale of the NCO's at the post and enabled them to maintain the high standard of the Military Police in assisting in the evacuation of casualties and the movement of supplies forward. Entered service from LONDON on 21st September, 1939. Date of birth 5.7.06.N. Bentham Comd 78 Div Pro Coy. Maj Gen R K Arbuthnott GOC 78 (Briti) In Div. Lieut Gen Mark W Clark US Army.
