He was formerly a Mounted Constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was born in Roscommon, Ireland and enlisted in the MMP 4/10/16 age 26 years, home address 44 St Alphonsus Road, Waterford, Ireland. Served home 4/10/16 to 26/1/17, BEF 27/1/17 to 22/4/17, Home 23/4/17 to 25/6/17, 28/6/17 Discharged no longer physically fit for war service. 29/1/17 to France, 21/2/17 3 Cavalry Division, 22/4/17 Invalided to England. 22/5/1916 married Katherina White, St Johns Church, Waterford, Ireland. From Pension Record: Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Began with pain in left side. Had cough, fever and Haemoptysis in April. Began to lose flesh in November 1916. Had night sweats in April. Was sent to hospital in France, and to England April 23rd 1917, Health prior to enlistment good. No history of Phthisis (TB) in family. Cause of disability Exposure and Strain on active service. He was discharged 28/6/17 and died 13/6/19 after discharge, Army Register of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929.
Info from Widows' Pension Award Sheet: 4/10/1916 enlisted, 28/6/1917 discharged no longer physically fit for war service, 13/6/1919 died at County & City Infirmary, Waterford, Ireland from phthisis contracted on active service. Widow Katherine Kavanagh, married 22/5/1916, born 6/4/1892, address 44 Street, Alphonsus Road, Waterford, Ireland. 3/9/1919 she received a pension of 20/- per week.
