THE LATE PRINCE MAURICE. Soldier's Funeral In Fighting Line. Corporal W. H. Dyer, of the Military Mounted Police, writing to his wife, who resided as 47, Hight Street, Ryde, Says:- I was one of the Mounted Police who attended the burial of the young Prince Maurice, beside the escort of the King's Royal rifles. The general and his staff were there. I had a button off his suit, also I picked a piece off a yew tree by the side of his grave. "He was buried on October 30th, at about 8.30 p.m. and not very far away the German big guns were firing on our trenches and our guns were doing their best to put them out of action. The guns were making such a noise that we could not hear the Chaplain's voice. So he had a soldier's funeral amidst the noise of battle. Two floral wreaths were placed over the grave. It was rather a hot time there, bombs dropping in the street from German aeroplanes and shells at night. |
