Found in Army Record: This is to certify that No. 780, Cpl, Joseph Cooper has served with the colours with the Rifle Brigade and with the mounted infantry, as acting Corporal. Seeing active service in South Africa durning 1901-1902. For the last 10 years he has served with the MFP , for 9 years as L/Cpl, 1 year as Cpl. He has shown himself to be honest, sober, trustworthy at all times. Whilst stationed in Edinburgh for 2 1/2 years he earned a Commendation of the Chief Constable; during the last year and a half whilst stationed in Malta he has been, until admitted to hospital for consumption, always active and hard working, showing himself to be an exemplary NCO and thoroughly to be trusted.
