SANIDACRE FAMILY'S PROUD WAR RECORD.
Moving Artillery At Anzio Beach Head During Day Light.
Both the men folk of the Straw family of 6 Doncaster Avenue, Sandiacre are serving overseas with the Forces. The father, Mr S Straw is at present with a Royal Army Medical Corps unit in Belgium, and his son Company Quartermaster Sergeant Syd Straw is with the Provost Section of a famous British Infantry Division in the Mediterranean theatre writes a military observer.
It was in August 1940 that CQMS Straw enlisted in the Corps of Military Police and he came overseas in March 1942, when his Division played a leading part in the North African campaign. They later formed the spearhead of the action which captured the island of Pantlaria and after s short time in Naples went to the Anzio Beach-head where they were amongst the first troops ashore.
His Biggest Wartime Job.
It was in Anzio that CQMS Straw had the biggest job of his wartime career - that of controlling the whole of the division's artillery when it was secretly moved by night from the central sector to the Nettuno front. The traffic control and guarding of vulnerable points form the main part of the Provost Section's work in the field and during the Italian campaign casualties were very high amongst them. Cross Roads, Bridges, road diversions and other important points are constantly patrolled by CMP men.
While acting as regimental sergeant major he was slightly wounded by shrapnel - "But" he said "I'm none the worse for it do-day."
In civil life he is employed as a clerk by the Stanton Iron Works Company.
