Extract from the Larne Times, 10/7/1947. Carrickfergus Sergeant, Palestine Service.
Trained at the Guards Depot, Caterham in 1939, Sergeant R McQuitty of 10 Albert Road, Carrickfergus, is now in the Corps of Royal Military Police stationed in Palestine.
"I have had a very interesting life in the Military Police since I joined them in 1942." he said in an interview with a Military Observe. "My most exciting time was when I was stationed in Ismalia last year. Quite accidentally I came into contact with some men who were in the habit of smuggling hashish and opium across the border into Palestine. After several days of gaining their confidence they 'persuaded' a friend of mine and myself to take a load of hashish across the border. We laid a trap for them which resulted in the capture of hashish and opium valued at £70,000.
"We were running the risk of dealing with men who could not have hesitated to shoot us had they fot the wind of our trap. However, it is all part of the job of the Military Police. Soon after that incident, in May, 1946 I was posted to the 1st Division Provost Company stationed in Palestine. So far smugglers have kept out of my area."
Before joining the Army Sergeant McQuitty was a brick-maker, and although he is due out of the Army in April, 1948 he is considering signing on for a further period in the Corps of Military Police.
