Extract from Litchfield Mercury, 11/7/41: A Proud Litchfield Mother, MBE For Her Son.
The award of the MBE to RSM William Richard Rea Martin, of the Corps of Military Police, recalls the fact that some years ago he was so badly injured in a motorcar accident that his spine was fractured and his right hip dislocated. A wonderful recovery enabled him to be passed completely fit for service. One of the first to congratulate Mr Martin on the award of the MBE, was his 86 year old mother, who lives at Litchfield. Born in Maidstone Barracks fifty four years ago, Mr Martin enlisted in August, 1914 and in the last Great War served with the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry, Five of his brothers and two brothers in law also were on active service throughout that campaign. Mr Martin, whose father had a long association with the Royal West Kent's, speaks Arabic Fluently, and on occasions while out East, on secret police work, he disguised himself as an Arab. Out of a total of 27 years an 11 months in the Army, he has been a member of the Corps of Military Police for 23, and was promoted Regimental Sergeant Major on the outbreak of the present war, For a time as a boy he lived with his parents at Worcester, and was educated at St Paul's School. For a long time he has been discharging his duties at Aldershot, His main hobbies are fishing, snooker and stamp collecting. In the pursuit of the last named, he has amassed twenty thousand specimens.
