Citation: North Africa.5385975 L/Cpl. Herbert Leslie Hearn. 227 (L of C) Pro Coy. CMP.Citation. This NCO landed in Algiers on 13/11/1942 and the Section in which he was serving was sent to Bone immediately. He carried on his duties at all times with great efficiency and unconcern for the heavy Air Raids to which the town was subjected at the time. During one particularly heavy raid a part of the town was set on fire by incendiary bombs and the local Fire Brigade were turned out to deal with them. Before the fire fighting equipment was properly connected, HE bombs were dropped and the native firemen left their equipment and tool cover. L/Cpl Hearn who was on duty at the time removed incendiaries from nearby buildings, coupled up the hoses, and was responsible for the fires being quickly extinguished. During the whole time his section was on duty at Bone, this NCO's bearing whilst carrying out Police work under heavy stress was worthy of the highest praise.Recommended by: OC 227 Pro Coy, Chief Admin Officer, Allied HQ,Shown in London Gazette as awarded an MID but appears to have been awarded the BEM.
