Citation: | MPSC. Queen's Birthday Honours. Colchester, Jan 1972 to Sept 1979. SNCO in charge of unit farm.Citation: Staff Sergeant Murray first enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry n 1951 and served for four years, which included a tour in Korea where he was mentioned in dispatches. He then served as an Inspector in the Kenya Police until the end of the Mau Mau emergency when he rejoined the Durham Light Infantry before transferring to the Military Provost Staff Corps in 19? For the past eight years he has been in charge of the Military Corrective Training Centre Farm which comprises gardens and a piggery of 300 pigs. The purpose of this farm is to provide constructive and useful rehabilitation training for servicemen under sentence prior to their discharge into civilian life. Throughout his period in charge of the farm he has devoted all his working time and many of his own leisure hours to completely modernising every aspect of the farm and redesigning the pig breeding and rearing facilities. He has so enthused the imagination of the servicemen committed to his charge that they have volunteered their efforts for the construction work and the day to day labour required. By involving these servicemen in the management aspects and in planning, he has given them a new sense of purpose and equipped them with a skill and with a fresh outlook on life which was lacking before. He has taken a deep personal interest in the servicemen under his care, sparing no efforts to ensure that he has imparted to each and every one his own considerable experience and knowledge, so that they are fully equipped to earn a useful living on discharge. he has even sought to resettle several with prospective employers and sometimes with success. Staff Sergeant Murray's efforts have been well beyond the call of duty. He has by his own example, skill and devotion set an example to everyone in his Corps and by his unremitting dedication he has been personally responsible for the successful rehabilitation of many servicemen at the end of their sentence. It is strongly recommended that his exceptional efforts and devotion should be recognised by an award.Initiating officer L C J M Paul, Commandant, recommended Brig M N S McCord. |
