Citation: | Shepton Mallet, 10th March 1959, Discipline Staff Sergeant, MPSC.Citation: S/Sgt MARSH was on disciplinary duty in the Imprisonment Wing at the Military Prison and Detention Barracks, Shepton Mallet, on 10th March 1959 when a serious disturbance occurred, during the midday meal. This disturbance took the form of a display of violence by all but one or two of the seventy one prisoners in the wing. There were two other members of the Staff on duty at the time. The senior Staff Sergeant ? became ineffective and the RAF Flight Sergeant was put out of action through injuries. This left Staff Sergeant Marsh entirely on his own for some minutes. He reused to submit to the mutineers and although violently attacked by the resisters with great courage he tried hard to fight his way to the alarm bell. By his action he gained valuable time and this enabled others to reach the scene with reinforcements before the mutineers had gained complete control of the situation. Had he not continued to resist with great physical and moral courage the mutineers would undoubtedly have held the Staff as hostages and made the quelling of this disorder infinitely more difficult.Recommended by: Lt/Col, Commandant MP & DB, Shepton Mallet, Brig, PM (Army), War Office, Maj/Gen.
