Extract from the Belfast News Letter, 15 April 1978 DRINK FACTOR IN TANDRAGEE ROAD HORROR,
The moderate concentration of drink found in the blood of a military policeman who was killed when his mini car crashed into a tree near Tandragee may have been and important factor in the accident
Deputy State Pathologist Dr Derek Carson stated this in a post mortem report read at an inquest in Armagh yesterday.
A verdict of misadventure was returned on Corporal George Hall Middlemas (24) who was based at Mahon road camp, Portadown.
Firemen had to extricate him from the car embedded in a tree 400 yards past Ballyknock Power Station on the main Portadown Tandragee Road last November.
Dr Carson stated that the alcohol concentration of 126 ml. per 100 ml in the blood was unlikely to have caused gross or even intoxication but nevertheless it would have impaired the Corporal's judgement, reflexes and driving ability.
