A young Leicester military policeman killed by terrorists in Cyprus, as buried in Nicosia today while his father, who was with him when he died, rushed back home to be at the bedside of his sick wife. The military policeman was L/cpl Colin Neville Keighley (19), the only son of Mrs and Mrs Frank Keightley, of 174 Kimberley Road, Leicester. He was one of two soldiers injured when terrorists threw a bomb into an Army billet in Famagusta a week yesterday. 'Was with him.' He was taken to a military hospital in Nicosia, where he died on Saturday. Owing to this serious condition his father w He was flown to Nicosia last Wednesday by the War Office, and returned to Leicester on Saturday afternoon. " I was with my boy when he died on Saturday," Mr Keightley told the evening mail. "I did not wait for the funeral, which was taking place today, because I was anxious to get back home to my wife, who was ill as a result of the tragic events. "I am sure that would have been my son's wish. I am glad to say that my wife is much better." L/Cpl Keightley, who was 6'2" tall, and described by neighbours as "a grand boy." was serving a three year Regular engagement. He chose the military police for the experience, as he intended to make a carer in the civilian police when discharged. Before joining up he was employed by Mellor Bromley, Ltd. the Leicester engineering firm, where his father is also employed. |
