| Citation: | New Year Honours. Major John James Collins, BEM, (502507). Oc 246 Pro Coy, Helmstedt, RMP. Aug 83 - Jun 85.Citation: Major Collins has commanded 246 Provost Company which mans the autobahn access to Berlin, at Helmstedt since August 1983. he has a small establishment which must cater for mandatory routine duties and be prepared for many contingencies. There is a lot of real estate and facilities to care for and a large variety of agencies with which to deal. The unit is isolated. All the 52,000 servicemen and sponsored visitors that travel the corridor each year are processed, cared for and have their interests and safety protected by the unit. Many of these visitors are important and senior persons of many nationalities each of whom Major Collins deals with personally at whatever time of day or night they travel. At the same time Major Collins mus coordinate his activities with the french and American allies. he must maintain working relations with the Soviets and act as Garrison Commander on matters or relationships with outsiders has been assiduously enhanced by dint of long hours, patient effort and much good natured acceptance of often tedious social duties. The relationship with the Soviets has been expertly created with a mixture of firmness and friendliness and by means of always being available to discuss and cooperate. Major Collins personally processes convoys with the soviet Commander. When this happens in the middle of the night it calls for a particular devotion to duty and he has never let it detract from his other responsibilities. Major Collins is dedicated to his job for seven days in the week and rarely takes time off. he has created a highly efficient and effective organisation with the minimum of manpower resources by making efforts far beyond those required to fill the post.Recommended by: Lt/Col, CO 2 RMP. 2 Senior Officers in Berlin.
