| Citation: | Kure, Japan Act of Distinguished Conduct: In the early hours of 8th December, 1955, information was received by the British Commonwealth Base Provost Company from the Civil Police that a soldier was walking about the streets of Kure armed with a pistol. Sergeant Hickey, accompanied by another NCO immediately reported to the Civil Police who, in the meantime had located the soldier in a dwelling house. The two NCO's were joined by two Japanese policemen and together the party went towards the building in question. As they approached the house the lights were turned out and it was only after flashing a torch that the soldier was located sitting just inside the front door. Sergeant Hickey approached him and ordered him to hand over the pistol. The soldier however made as if to use the weapon. Sergeant Hickey, showing great presence of mind, then closed with him and prevented him. The soldier then became violent but assisted by the remainder of the party Sergeant Hickey disarmed him and took him into custody. Sergeant Hickey showed courage and devotion to duty of the highest order. His actions were in accordance with the best traditions of the Service and of his Corps. The Commander-in-Chief directs that this Act of Distinguished Conduct be recorded in the documents of Sgt. Hickey.Extract from British Commonwealth Forces Korea Routine Order. |
