Extract from the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intellingencer - Thursday 3 September 1942. HUDDERSFIELD MAN'S GALLANTRY. HELPED IN BLAZING PLANE RESCUE. Disregarding exploding ammunition and flying metal Pte. C. Ingham, CMP (VP)| of Bradley Road, Bradley, Huddersfield and a companion, climbed on to the blazing plane which had crashed and freed the pilot. Their gallantry has been recorded in South Eastern Command Army Orders which state that in July Pte. Martin McLoughlin, A.F.F. W. Pioneer Corps and Pte. Ingham displayed resolution and courage of high order. Mcloughlin had to stand on the petrol tank and lean over in to the cockpit surrounded by flames which burned his arm to free the pilots feet. Ingham standing on the wing of the machine, supported the pilots shoulders whilst McLoughlin released his feet. Between them and without any certainty that he was alive or dead, they carried the pilot clear of the burning machine. McLoughlin lives in Dee Road, Lancaster. Pte Ingham who is 23 was born in Brighouse and before jo8ining the Army two years ago was employed a the Trafalgar Mills of Learoyd, Bros., woolen manufacturers, Leeds Road, Huddersfield. He joined the Pioneer Corps,, but for some months has been in the Military Police (Bluecaps). His mother yesterday said her son wrote about eight weeks ago and told her about the incident. She added: "Cyril did not say very much about it in his letter, except to say that he was sorry they could not have saved the life of the pilot". He has not been home since, as he has been sent on a course and his leave has been temporarily postponed. Martin and Cyril have been very great friends." Mrs Ingham has another son Joseph serving in India with the Royal Corps of Signals. The above story in also found in the Dover Express - Friday 4 September 1922 and the Yorkshire Evening Post - Wednesday 2 September 1942 this article has a head shot of Pte Ingham in battledress. |
