He was captured in North Africa with L/Cpl's Kinchin, Dodds, Grimley, Mccarthy, Mellowes and Murphy who ere being transported to Italy in an Italian ship SS Scillin with 810 other prisoners when the ship was attacked by the British Submarine HMS Sahib 15 miles off Cap Bon, Tunisia.
