Stewart Leach, was his by two shots as his car waited at traffic lights in Munster, Then a corporal in the Devon & Dorset Regiment was his near his Osnabruck base. Extract from the People, 30/3/1980. A British soldier had a date with his bride yesterday - and two IRA bullets in the back failed to stop him keeping it. Corporal Stewart Leach, 22, limped down the isle of his village church in civilian clothes to wed Lancashire lass Anita Smith. He couldn't wear the blue dress uniform he's had specially made because after being shot in an ambush at Munster, West Germany, a month ago, he lost so much weight it didn't fit him. Stewart, from West Monkton, Somerset was so seriously wounded it was feared at first that he and his WRAC bride would have to wed at his bedside. Stuart Leach |
