Thursday June 7th last, I was proceeding from the direction of the Mariners Square towards City road, on my bicycle. As I reached the bend at the bottom of Barn Street, I heard a bell ring as os someone coming rather fast down the hill. I applied by brakes immediately and the other cyclist L/Cpl C B James swerved to avid a collision and in doing seemed to lose control of his machine and came into contact with the wall , thereby receiving severe injuries to his person. His head and neck were cut and were bleeding profusely, also his wrist and ankle were injured. W W Aveston, Monday 17/9/1917.
