HARD LABOUR FOR SMOKING - LEWES MAN'S OFFENCE.
Albert James Thompson, of 23, Lancaster Street, Lewes, transport worker at Newhaven, was summoned at the Petty Sessions at Newhaven, contrary to regulations.
Defendant pleaded guilty.
Lance Corporal P. Farndon, of the Military Foot Police, said that on November 18th he was patrolling the quay at the harbour, and went on board a transport, where he saw accused smoking a pipe. He asked him what he was thinking of, and he replied, "Let me off this time; I've only just lit it." He was smoking in the alley way amidships about ten feet from the hold.
Defendant said that he did not know he was doing wrong. He had not his glasses and so could not read the notices., He understood that smoking was prohibited within six feet of the hatchway.
Detective Sergeant Coles said that the order was a new one, and defendant had tot mixed up with a previous one, which limited the distance to six feet in which smoking was permitted.
sentence of imprisonment for six weeks with hard labour was passed.
