I have received a certificate of marriage of the above named (Hardy), at present serving under your command, together with certificates of the births of 7 children all registered under the name NOBLE, Will you please cause L/Cpl Hardy to furnish a statement as to the discrepancy in the surname of his children. 2nd letter, 6/9/1918 The above named man has been interviewed, and states that, his correct name is NOBLE. In 1893, owing to some trouble, he was turned away from his home, and in the same year, enlisted in the Scots Guards in the name of HARDY. He married in 1897 or 1898 in the name of HARDY, but as each child was christened the name was given as NOBLE, because there is a probability in the future that certain money may be left by his relatives to these children. He lived with his wife up to October 1917. signed APM, Northern Command.
