No. Did you receive a lecture on how to behave in he event of capture ? Yes by an officer of the Int Corps in May 1944 at Bulford, Nr Salisbury. Were you lectured on escape and evasion ? Yes as above. Escape attempts: I masqueraded as an American soldier and change identity with Pte. Perkins, US Army who was not then fit for escape. He stayed a main camp while I went on working parties from which I escaped on 12/4/45 at Mar Oshotz, Saxony, contacted US Army at Wurzen about 22/2/45. Sabotage: I assumed the rank of L/Sgt to avoid being sent out to work, was aided in this by CSM McMahon, Cameron Highlanders. Collaboration ? None. Have you any other matter of any kind you wish to bring to notice ? Yes, the German officer i/c prison camp at Chatres near Paris, crowded 600 men into one room whose normal capacity would be in my opinion about 200. We did not receive adequate food and water and no exercise whilst there about six weeks. He regarded us with hostility because he reported to our RC Chaplain, his wife and family had been killed by RAF action. Medal card not found. John Gorman |
