Citation: | Trooper Francis Scott, Lovat Scouts, 18 Lorried Infantry Brigade, 3 Carpathian Division, 2 Polish Corps, Italy.Citation: On Nov 23rd 1944 Mountaineer SCOTT was sent out with Mtnr. Hawthorn to repair a signal line connecting the HQ of the Lovat Scouts with the HQ of the 6th Lancers. As this regiment was operating on the extreme left flank of the Eighth Army the only other link with the 6th Lancers went back through many higher formations to Fifth Army ans so forward again and accordingly the signal line was of great importance in maintaining co0operation. The line party of two was consistently and persistently shelled on the open ground South East Of MODIGLIANA (M.2309) but both linesmen never slackened their efforts and spent over two yours under heavy shell and mortar fire - much of it observed - repairing the new breaks in the line which the shellfire was constantly causing. Some of the work had to be done standing waist deep in the river in full view of enemy O.Ps on the opposite hills. Finally the shelling ceased and the pair mended the last break and reported their work completed. Mtn. Scott acted throughout with great courage, coolness and devotion to duty.Recommended by: Maj.
