Thomas was the son of William and Mary Ann (nee Gregg) Grinnall of Little Cheltenham, Dumbleton and later of Dumbleton Road, Evesham, Gloucestershire, his father being a farm labourer. At one time Thomas was employed as a butler’s assistant. Thomas joined the Birmingham City Police on Monday 7 December 1914, at that time aged 21 years and employed as a railway porter. He served on the ‘B’ Division with warrant number 8557 and collar number B 233 being appointed on Monday 31 January 1916. Thomas resigned from the Force on Tuesday 27 February 1917 to join the Military Mounted Police. He had attested in the Army on Friday 10 December 1915 but it was not until this date that he was mobilised. At that time he gave his address as Selly Oak Police Station. Thomas served in France from Sunday 15 April 1917 to Sunday 23 September 1917. On Wednesday 12 September 1917 Thomas received a gunshot wound to his chest which fractured his clavicle and was treated in the 61st Casualty Clearing Station, later being returned to England. On Monday 24 September 1917 he was admitted to the Northampton General Hospital where he remained until Friday 15 March 1918 when he was removed to Abington Avenue Hospital, Northampton for his medical boards to take place. He was discharged from the Army on Tuesday 4 June 1918 as being no longer physically fit for service. Thomas is buried in Brandwood End Cemetery, King’s Heath in Grave C. 1. “C”. 786. He was 25 years of age. Commemorated on the West Midlands Police HQ Roll of Honour. Awarded the Victory and War Medal. First served abroad (1) France, 5/4/17 and Silver War Badge, List MPC/66 (name spelt Grinnall). No inscription on gravestone.
