Notes: | RMP. Died 30/4/1956. Place of death not know. Born 29/4/1933. Leonard Lock. Extract from the Leicester Evening Mail, 4 May 1956. Accident verdict on redcaps. Tragedy shouldn't have happened. A lorry swung across the road without any signal being given and a motorcyclist crashed into it side, said a police officer at the inquest in Leicester Town Hall yesterday on: L/Cpl Michael Fogg (20), of 122, Grange Road, Wigston Fields and L/Cpl Leonard Lock, (23) of 63 Stephenson Drive, Leicester. Another witness, Mr Charles Pennington of 10, The Rise, Rothley, said he was alarmed by the lorry's sharp and sudden turn. A jury returned verdicts of accidental death on the two military policemen, who died in Leicester Infirmary from head injuries. The Coroner, Mr. G E Bouskell-Wade, said it was " a lamentable tragic accident that should not have occurred." 'Momentary Error' There was he thought evidence of negligence on the part of the lorry driver Mr. Edward George Light but manslaughter did not necessarily cover a momentary error of judgment. P S T Anzani said he saw the accident from a stationary car 50 yards away. The motorcycle driven by Cpl. Fogg with Cpl Lock a pillion passenger, was travelling along Loughborough road and approaching Rothley crossroads. The lorry coming in the opposite direction, swung across the road towards the Blue Star garage said the sergeant. ' Dragged along' No signal was given, The motorcycle veered closer to its near side as if to pass in front of the lorry, which continued it's course across the road, reducing its speed. "As the front wheels of the lorry went over the kerb at the entrance of the garage, the motorcyclist attempted to swerve away from the lorry but stuck its side and was dragged along." The motorcycle he added left a 60' skid mark. Mr Pennington said he was waiting for a bus when he was alarmed by the lorry's " and sudden turn." The Coroner complimented both witnesses on the clear way in which they gave evidence and said it was rare in such cases to find two un conflicting accounts. |
