Citation: | Citation: Major Mackie has served in the Highland Division since 1942. In the North West European campaign he commanded the Divisional Pro Coy unit Nov 1944 when he was appointed APM. Throughout the campaign he has Given very gallant and distinguished service in a difficult job under extremely arduous conditions. Major Mackie has at all times taken personal charge of the necessary reconnaissances for forward routes both for the deliberate attack and the sustained pursuit battle. In the Normandy bridgehead particularly he personally reconnoitred under heavy fire during all battles. By day and night he directed and supervised the marking and lighting of route effecting liaison with the forward troops and never deterred by enemy fire. In the assault on Le Havre and in the pursuit battle across the Seine. He displayed determination and gallantry of the highest order. The arduous Ardennes campaign demanded the utmost energy under the most adverse conditions and much is owed to Major Mackie's enthusiasm and drive in the month long battle in the Reichswald, and the preparation for the assault across the Rhine and in the sustained advances which followed until the German capitulation, Major Mackie was constantly in the forefront of the Division ensuring that the advance of the forward troops was not impeded. From the beginning until the end of the campaign Major Mackie has displayed outstanding gallantry and determination. The success of the Divisions's operations has in no small measure depended on his organisation, coolness and magnificent sense of duty and his bravery under fire on countless occasions has been admitted by all.Recommended by Maj Gen 51 (H) Div, Lt Gen 30 Corps, Fd Marshall 21 Army Group. |
