| Citation: | 139 Brigade, 46 Div, 5 Corps. 6 Lincolnshire Regt. 4803415, Lance Sergeant, Alfred Matthews. At SEDJENANE on the 3 and 4 Mar. 43 this N.C.O. commanded a rifle platoon with coolness, skill and outstanding courage repelling all enemy attempts to penetrate his position. Although he was wounded he remained with his Bren gunner to cover his platoon out in the withdrawal, and being the last to leave was cut off by enemy infiltration. Nevertheless,, he outwitted the enemy, who was at one time had a machine gun section in action within ten yards of him, and made his way back to rejoin his battalion next day. The determination, courage and resources of this N.C.O. was an outstanding example to his comrades. |
