Citation: Military Medal CitationEscape and evasion ItalyRAYNER was taken prisoner in N.Africa on 27 May 42. At the time of the Italian Armistice he was a prisoner at MONTURANO (Camp 70). Contrary to the orders of the S.B.O. he left this camp on 12 Sep. 43, forcing his way past the English and Italian sentries.Travelling to the ASCOLI PICENO area RAYNER found shelter with Italian civilians. From the beginning of March 44 until June 44 RAYNER did excellent work in distributing to other P/W supplies dropped by parachute and in collecting P/W into parties for crossing the lines. In addition, he assisted in partisan activities for 5 months, being wounded during a rain on CASTIGANO on 12 Jun.44. Six days later he entered ASCOLI PICENO with the partisans and assumed command until the arrival of Allied forces. RAYNER continued to work for AMGOT for another month before he went to the Repatriation Centre.Awarded the Military Medal. National Archive WO 373/64
