Extract from the Manchester Evening News - Thursday 18 September, 1941. Soldier 50, Died on Leave.
Fifty year old Private John Smethurst who served in the last war and joined up in this war to serve in the Military Police, collapsed and died when he came home on leave. At the Swinton inquest today his widow Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Smethurst of Houghton Street, Pendlebury, said her husband met with an ankle injury in camp. When he came home he could hardly walk.
He collapsed while she was out of the house. he daughter Ivy,, found her father lying with his arm in the fire. He was dead.
Medical evidence was that death was due to a heart disease of long standing. Natural causes was the verdict.
