No. 2871816 Warrant Officer Class III (platoon Sergeant Major) Charles Fullerton, The 5 Gordon Highlanders.Citation: He was in command of a platoon of D Company on the forward edge of the Heyswalt Wood on the extreme left in the battalion front. This post was heavily shelled, both in the morning and in the evening of the 14th and each shelling was followed by an attack which was repulsed. Owing to enemy fighting patrols it was not possible to establish communications with battalion HQ. Accordingly PSM Fullerton set off by himself and got through to Coy. HQ and led back a fighting patrol ans stretcher bearers, thereby enabling the wounded to be evacuated. He then led the patrol to the the Bois Cawe which was occupied by the enemy. This he seized, capturing some 10 prisoners and leaving about 20 dead. The following day accompanied 2/Lt Gall on his patrol and found that the forward platoon posts had been captured by the enemy. In the evening he personally covered the withdrawal of the remainder of the Company, consisting of Capt. Lowrie and 28 men. he displayed great efficiency and courage in the setting of booby traps and inflicted severe casualties on the enemy. PSM Fullerton was subsequently taken prisoner as St Valery on June 11.
