Casualty List 1685, Home, Died, 12/2/45. Inscription on gravestone: At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember him. Served in the Middle East, after leave he walked from Baleshare to Lochmaddy a distance of 10 miles in deep snow, he developed pneumonia and died in hospital in Inverness. Many friends and acquaintances will be grieved to learn of the sudden death in the City Hospital, Aberdeen, of Malcolm Robertson, Corps of Military Police. He was 28 years old and eldest son of Mr and Mrs Neil Robertson, Balshare, North Uist. L/Cpl Robertson joined the army in 1937 and went abroad with the 2nd Batt. Scots Guards in 1938. During his six years service in the Middle East he saw much hard fighting in the Desert and was among the few survivors from that Battalion. He was always regarded by his comrades as a gallant outstanding soldier. He was transferred from the Scots Guards to the Military Police and as a member of that Corps he served in Cairo and Alexandria before returning the this country in April 1944. His remains were taken to Balshare for burial. Representatives of the Corps of Military Police at the funeral were CSM McLeod from Inverness and L/Cpl Wooley from Aberdeen, who laid two beautiful wreaths on the grave. Other floral tributes were from his sister and friends. The death of a gallant soldier came as a great blow to the island and he will be deeply mourned by his loved ones.
