Extract from WO 36/81, BEF, France, CMP Missing. I have to report that the last time I saw L/Cpl Jarvis was just outside St. Valery at about 10.00 hrs on the 12/6/1940, Later in the day whilst being attacked by the enemy on the beach at St. Valery a lifeboat was pushed into the water and a number of soldier's climbed in and began to row away. This boat was machine gunned and all the occupants were killed. I later heard that L/Cpl Jarvis was in the boat but whether he was one of the victims or not I cannot say. 84349 Sgt H Craig, CM Police, Exeter, 30/1/1942.
At approx 13.00 hrs, 11/6/1940 I saw L/Cpl J Jarvis and several others, attempting to get away in a small boat, they had only proceeded a distance of about 20 yards when the men and boat were riffled by enemy fire, the boat sank and I did not see any survivors. I was on the pier until 03.00 hrs. 12th June and still failed to see L/Cpl J Jarvis. In my opinion he was killed whilst in the boat at 13.00 hrs, 11/6/1940 at St Valery-en-Caux. No. 843943 L/Cpl H Craig was in my section and was with me at St Valery-En-Caux, he may be able to corroborate my statement. Signed Sgt R Izatt Corps of Military Police, Sevenoaks, Kent Area, 24/6/1941.
John Jarvis.
