Medal card not found. No inscription on gravestone. Herbert William Dodman. Extract from the Gloucestershire Echo - 12 August 1944. DIED SAVING HIS COMPRADES. During the evening of July 5, Pte. W H Dodman, CMP, was on duty in London "spotting" for flying bombs. the flight of a bomb was observed coming straight for the back of the house, The whistle was blown but Pte. Dodman realised that there were men in rooms at the rear of the building who might not hear it. He rushed to the back where he was seen blowing his whistle in the open until the bomb dropped and exploded beside him, when he was instantly killed. There is not doubt that Pte. Dodman was responsible for saving the lives of many of his comrades who, by his gallant action, were able to take cover in time, and Lt-General Sir Charles Lloyd, the General Officer Commanding London District has directed that his action be recorded on the official records. Pte. Dodman's home address is Fakenham, Norfolk. |
