Extract from the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser, 3/4/43. HUISH EPISCOPI FATALITY.
The inquest was opened at Taunton on Monday on Pte. Ronald Cousins (27), Corps of Military Police who, when motor cycling at Huish Episcopi on Saturday morning collided with the village was memorial and in falling from his cycle received head injuries from which he died in Taunton hospital on Sunday. He belonged to the Traffic Control Section of the CMP, and at the time of the accident which occurred at 8.50 am was acting as a dispatch rider. Two stone pillars at the foot of the memorial were broken as a result of the collision. His wife and four year old child live at 31 Sandringham Avenue, Whiston, Rotherham, Yorkshire. In civil life he was an invoice clerk. He had been in the Army since August 1940. After hearing evidence of identification from an Army colleague, the Deputy Coroner (Mr F W Willmott) adjourned the inquest until next Monday.

SOLDIER CYCLIST KILLED.
COLLIDED WITH WAR MEMORIA.
A verdict of "Death by misadventure" was returned by the Deputy Coroner (Mr. F S Willmott) at the adjourned inquest at Taunton Hospital on Monday on Private Ronald Cousins (27), Corps of Military Police who died at the hospital on March 28th from injuries sustained the previous day when while motorcycling at Huish Episcopi he collided with the Village war memorial.
The war memorial stands at a "T" road junction at Huish Episcopi and instead of turning either right or left both roads being unobstructed the deceased was seen to ride straight across the junction into the steps of the memorial His wife and four year old child live at 31 Sandringham Avenue, Whiston, Rotherham, Yorkshire and he had bee in the army since August 1940.
Edward O'Connor, 1 Ducks hill, Huish Episcopi said he was walking towards the memorial when two army motor cyclist passed him going in the same direction. Before reaching the road junction the motorcyclists passed a lorry going in the opposite direction. he then saw one of the cyclist ride straight across the road junction and mount the kerb in front of the memorial when he reached the scene the rider was lying on the steps at the base of the memorial and being attended. There was noting to prevent the rider from taking either the left or right hand fork.
Lance Corporal Broom, CMP said there were no skid marks on the road.
Dr Malcolm Kumar, house Surgeon at the hospital said deceased was unconscious and suffering from shock when admitted after the accident. Very little cold be done for him and he died the next morning without recovering consciousness from cerebral hemorrhage.
