A British soldier captured a runaway German convict after a woodland chase at Bielefeld, West Germany on Friday night.
The soldier heard a noise outside his quarters, looked out and saw a German policeman chasing someone. He dashed out and gave chase finally cornering the man in a wood.
The soldier was named as Corporal Antony Guilfoyle, aged 27 of the Royal Military Police from Bradford, Yorkshire.
He is stationed with the 1st British Corps Provost Company in Bielefeld.
Bottle - Cpl Guilfoyle was spending the last hours of his leave in his Army married quarters with his wife Mary, aged 22, when he heard shots.
He snatched an empty bottle from the kitchen and set off to investigate.
the chase lasted five minutes. Then the unknown man raced into his jacket but Cpl Guilfoyle threatened him with the bottle and he surrendered.
The two were joined by the German policeman three minutes later and the man was taken to a police station.
The German CID named the man as Gustav Spolke who broke out of a Frankfurt jail a few weeks ago.
