After 20 years with the colours Staff Sergeant J O'Callaghan, now serving with the Corps of Military Police has been awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. The presentation was made recently in Dusseldorf by Major General S Lamplugh, Rhine District Commander.
Staff Sergeant O'Callaghan whose wife lives at 28, Clifton Street, Preston, served with the Devonshire Regiment in India until transferring to the Royal Military Police in 1939.
His service during the war took him to North Africa for the landing at Algiers in 1942. He advanced with the 1st Army up to Tunis and finished the war in Italy. Then in 1949 he was in Malaya, where he trained Malayan troops in provost duties. He went to Germany in May of this year and is serving on the provost staff of HQ Rhine District.
A keen sportsman throughout his career, Staff Sergeant O'Callaghan has appeared in district rugby and hockey teams both at home and overseas.
"The Army is a grand life." says Staff Sergeant O'Callaghan, whose parents live at Ringaskiddy, Col Cork, Ireland.
