Citation: Captain (temporary Major) Keith Robert Gentles (109235), 4/6 Rajputana Rifles, Indian Army. (Littlehampton).Citation: During the operations on the MARETH LINE Capt. Gentles was sent forward on the night 27/28 March 43 with a Coy which had been ordered to seize part of the "DHELI" feature. The night was very dark and it was known that the lower slopes were mined with A.P. mines and booby traps, Capt. Gentles on arrival at the foot of the hill went ahead with one man and reconnoitred a way up through which his men then followed. At day light it was found that he had passed through a mined area. By his courageous action he undoubtedly saved casualties and enabled his men to go forward. During the operations in WADI AKARIT area, on 6 Apr 43, an enemy machine gun was holding up the advance from a flank. Capt. Gentles accompanied by his batman and Lt. Tate R.A. immediately stalked the post. Capt. Gentles and his batman killing two of the enemy with rifle fire whilst Lt. Tate engaged the post with a captured machine gun. The post surrendered, some ten prisoners being taken. By this prompt action the advance was able to continue.
