The Tragically Sudden Death in Deansgate.
Formerly in the 7th Hussars.
The painfully sudden death of Arthur Thomas Cunliffe (34), who lodged with his brother John, Cunliffe, labourer, 11, Merrick Street, which occurred in Deansgate on Monday morning, was inquired into by the Borough Coroner (Mr. J M Rutter), at the Infirmary, this afternoon.
Evidence of identification was given by deceased's brother. Deceased had worked at Messrs. Woods' foundry for three months. He was in the army for nine or ten years, being discharged as medically unfit for service on March 10th. He was first in the 7th Hussars and afterwards in the Military Mounted Police. He told witness he was discharged on account of bad teeth, but had always appeared in good health. Geo. Barkis, 3, Crescent Avenue, foreman millwright at Messrs. Woods' Foundry, as deceased complained of pains in his stomach about 20 minutes to nine on Monday morning and witness gave him permission to leave his work. Geo C. Treacher, a member of the Fire Brigade, deposed that he was informed shortly after nine o'clock that a man had fallen in a fit near St. Paul's Church. Witness went across and found the man unconscious. Deceased was conveyed to the Fire Station and afterwards in the ambulance to the Infirmary. Dr. Portens, junior house surgeon at the Infirmary, said deceased had expired when admitted to the Infirmary. A post-mortem examination had been held and it was fount that there had been a perforation of a small bowel caused by an ulcer ot old standing and this was sufficient to cause death. The jury returned a verdict of "Death from natural causes."
