Citation: | New Years Honours. 6399715 RQMS Alfred George Selmes, MCTC, Colchester. 14 Dec 1941 to present day.Citation: RQMS SELMES first joined the Territorial Army in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment on 16 Sept. 1937. He was embodied on 3 Sept 1939 but on 2 Jan 1940 he was transferred to the Reserve being under age for active service. He re-enlisted again the the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment on 15 Dec 41 and served with them in the United Kingdom, the Middle East and North West Europe until May, 48. During this period he reached the tank of WS/WOII in which rank he was very well reported on for his high sense of duty and general ability. From 11 May 48 to 11 Dec 52 he served at the Home Counties Training Brigade Centre, The School of Infantry and at the Depot of the Buffs. In all of these appointments, as a WOII he was reported on as outstanding in every way and was recommended for accelerated promotion. He eventually transferred to the Military Provost Staff Corps on 3 Dec 53. In this Corps he has once again shown himself to be outstanding both as a training instructor and on 'Q' duties. He is a good disciplinarian, entirely loyal and very hardworking having no regard for the hours that he works except to finish the task in hand. Whilst employed in the Quartermaster Stores as a Sergeant he quickly mastered the problem and in a very short time was able to instruct two senior NCOs in their duties of RQMS. Since then he himself has been promoted to RQMS in which post he has shown himself to be exceptionally capable. There is not doubt that he is an outstanding personality who carries out his duties with great efficiency, and has the confidence of respect of all those both above and below him. His industry and devotion to duty have again earned him a further recommendation for accelerated promotion.Recommended by: Commandant, MCTC, Brig.
