Notes: | Provost Officer. Royal Artillery. OC 105 Pro Coy 1942. London Gazette 35821, page 5439, 15/12/42 Royal Artillery, History of the Corps of Military Police, S F Crozier, MBE, page 71, Plans were made to a further advance westwards and these included extending the railhead to Mekili and marking a track across the desert from Al Adem to Msus. The task of marking this route was given to the DAPM Army, Captain Cashen, an officer with an almost uncanny knack of finding his way about in the "blue." The day after completing this stupendous task the DAPM set out over the route and found his way with little difficulty to HQ 13 Corps, a trip of some 250 miles over every conceivable type of desert going. A few days later the Afrika Korps started an offensive and advanced along this very route which Captain Cashen had so painstakingly marked the previous wee. Also page 74. "Once the El Alamein line had been consolidated it seemed that the onrush of the Africa Korps had been stopped, but there was still a possibility that if a strong armoured column could make its way to Cairo across the desert a further retirement, this time across the Suez Canal into Palestine, would be inevitable. With this in view the D.P.M. was instructed to reconnoitre and sign two routes, both east of the Amariya - Cairo Road. This task was carried out within twenty four hours by Captains Cashen and Mandy, O.C. 105 Provost Company. Fortunately these measures turned out to be over insurance.
