Extract from the Mansfield Reporter 17 February 1920. "M.P." SUMMOND FOR ASSAULT. CASE DISMITTED.
At the Borough Police Court, on Wednesday, a mine named George Nolan, of 7, Beresford Street, summoned Corporal John E. Chadburn, of the Military Mounted Police, for assault. Defendant pleaded not guilty
Nolan stated that shortly after midnight on the 14th inst. the defendant struck him in the face with his fist, blacking his eye and knocking him down.
Defendant: Did you Kick me.
Complainant: No.
Samuel Wooley, miner, 20 Beresford Street, the next witness, explained that Nolan went to No. 26, Moor Street, the house of Mr Potter and asked if his wife was there. Mr. Potter came out of the house and the defendant left by the front door. Noland said the defendant had been saying something about him and the defendant afterwards struck him once or twice, knocking him down.
P.S. Barlow stated that Nolan made a complaint at the police station at 2 a.m. on the 15th inst and witness accompanied him to 26, Moore Street. Witness here saw the defendant and a sergeant-majo0r and Mr. and Mrs. potter. Hearing some one to into the scullery, witness asked who it was and Mrs. Nolan them came into the kitchen. Defendant denied assaulting complainant.
Defendant: Was I sober?
Witness: Yes.
Defendant in the box,m said he was at No. 26 Moor Street on the night in question,m when, hearing a noise in the yard, he went outside and saw Nolan who kicked him in the stomach and ran away, "I had not chance to assault him," he added.
William Potter, of 26 Moor Street,m said he had invited the defendant to supper that night and about midnight a man enquired if Mrs. Noland was there. Noland was in the yard and kicked the defendant in the stomach, as a result of which witness had to give him brandy. Defendant did not strike the complainant.
Mrs. Potter gave similar evidence.

The case was dismissed.
