Citation: Lord Kitchener's Dispatches. 3385 L/Cpl C Hawes, 2 Somerset Light Infantry. During Boer attack on convoy near Mooifontein, south of Bethel, on 25th May, 1901, seeing a man in danger of being burnt by veldt fire, ran back and fetched him in, though the Boers were within 400 yards, and firing heavily. He was accompanied by No. 4552 L/Cpl J Wilson, 2 Somerset Light Infantry also awarded an MID. Both promoted Cpl's by Commander in Chief.
