Citation: | CMP (I).Military Medal Citation.BurmaNov 17 1943 - May 14 1944 Throughout the divisonal campaign in the ARAKAN, this NCO has worked with untiring vigour, personally escorting convoys by day and by night over the NGAKYEDAUK PASS, especially during the later months of 1943, when the pass was in its initial and most dangerous stage. When the unit lines in the Div HQ area at LAUNG CHAUNG were attacked by the enemy on 6 February 1944, Corporal Ellis at considerable personal risk, carried a wounded signaller from the area, and drove him away to hospital in the Admin Box. Later at 1730 hours the same day he returned with the OC unit in a jeep to assist in warning the last tanks to cover the withdrawal of the medium guns. During the period the jeep was subjected to enemy machine gun fire and the three occupants could not break cover from behind it. To get to safety Corporal Ellis started the jeep with his hand; jumped into the seat, and drove it to safety whilst the others hung on , on the sheltered side. On the following day 7 February when communications by phone were out in the NGAKYEDAUK PASS, he proceeded together with the OC unit and Lance Corporal Bailey, in a carrier, to a point half way down the pass, which was in a few hours, cut by the enemy. Throughout the three weeks seige which followed, this NCO worked continuously without relief, and was an outstanding example to the rest of his unit.Awarded the MM.
