William Nicholson.
Decoration Record:
Decoration: Military Medal (London Gazette: 36928 Page: 799 Feb. 8, 1945)
Citation: Military Medal Citation.ItalyOn the 14 July 1944 Lance Corporal Nicholson was directing the traffic at the Bailey Bridge at CASTIGLIONE E FIORENTINO. Very accurate shellfire was opened on the bridge but Lance Corporal Nicholson continued to direct traffic, ignoring the danger. The drivers of a number of lorries approaching the bridge and seeing the bursts, took cover. This Lance Corporal appreciated that these lorries were on an exposed stretch of the road and that a serious block in full view of the enemy would ensure their destruction. With great calmness Lance Corporal Nicholson went down the road and ordered each driver to return to his vehicle and proceed on his way. In this way he got the whole column moving again.By his example and total disregard for danger, he kept the traffic flowing and undoubtedly prevented a situation which might have resulted in serious loss of life and transport. The bridge remained under fire almost continuously throughout the tour of his duty.Awarded an immediate MM. Recommended by the APM 6 Armd Div . National Archive WO 373/9.
