Citation: Maj. (temporary) John Gordon Hodges (2581650) Royal Army Service Corps. (Beaconsfield)Citation: For distinguished services and constant devotion to duty as Transport Major to CRASC, Eighth Army Troops during the period 1st April 1945 to 2nd May 1945. This officer was responsible for the control and co-ordination of operating transport in the clearance of maintenance trains arriving at RIMINI, FANO, CESNA, FORLI and FAENZA as well as all that engaged in third line duties providing for the entire Army's requirements of petrol, supplies, ammunition, Ordnance and EFI Stores to different Roadheads. The period in question was an unusually difficult one, due to the complex and ever changing nature of the Supply situation and to changes in the course of a few days, of both CRASC and second-in-command. The operational control of task vehicles fluctuated from a minimum equivalent of 7 GT Companies to a maximum equivalent of 27 GT Companies, involving a total of more than 3,000 vehicles. The units included British, Indian, Polish, Polish ATS, Palestinian and Italian Coys, together with a substantial addition of transport drawn from many RA and other first line sources. The efficient and economical operation of such a heterogeneous collection of transport, the prompt clearance of Railheads, the rapid stocking of Army Depots. This Officer has served continuously overseas for 4 1/2 years with Western Desert Force and Eighth Army and although aware that he was due to repatriation under PYTHON in early May allowed himself no relaxation whatsoever until his task was completed two days prior to his departure from the HQ.Recommended by CRASC 8th Army Troops, DA & QMG. 8th Army
